I'm a physicist, not a historian, but I can answer some of this.
Hertz used VHF or UHF, so wavelengths of a metre or so. These would diffract around corners well: they require fairly large objects to cast shadows. I've not heard of him using single slit diffraction. The Hertz wiki page

Regarding Maxwell and Hertzian waves, Physclips shows simple but modern measurements of speed of light and speed of UHF radio at
