A forum set up for physics questions from students in the courses PHYS1121, 1131, 1221 and 1331 at the University of New South Wales. It is intended for questions that cannot readily be answered in class,
either because they fall outside the main syllabus and therefore would be distraction (however interesting) or for other reasons.
I agree: great fun to 'play god' with a new solar system. Now in our universe...
It will be a while before we know much about the details of other solar systems. Prof Chris Tinney is an exoplanet hunter in our school and I use some of his data as an example in http://www.animations.physics.unsw.edu. ... oppler.htm
However, for a multi- stellar ballet, one can have a look at the orbits of some stars about the black hole at the centre of our galaxy, which I've used as an example in the Physclips chapter on Gravity (section 11.5) http://www.animations.physics.unsw.edu. ... avity.html
This is pretty cool, my daughter is turning 7 and she is asking all these questions about planets, the sun and the stars. Some of the links here will come pretty handy! I've already started building a few 3-d models of the solar galaxy with her.
